Why We Believe the PLT-750 Is the Best All-Round CO₂ Laser in Africa

If we had to recommend one CO₂ laser cutter to the widest range of South African businesses today, it would be the PLT-750 HQ CCD.

That is quite a statement from a company that sells an entire range of CO₂ laser machines.

But there is a reason.

The PLT-750 combines a powerful 90W CO₂ laser, a practical 700 × 500mm working area, built-in camera, adjustable air assist, active water cooling and important safety features in a machine that is compact enough to fit through a standard doorway.

More importantly, it solves one of the biggest problems in everyday laser production:

getting the job from the real world onto the laser bed quickly and accurately.

That is where the PLT-750 really starts to separate itself from a conventional CO₂ laser cutter.

The camera changes how you use a laser

The PLT-750 has a built-in 5MP camera designed to work with LightBurn.

This isn’t simply a camera for watching the machine.

Once correctly calibrated, LightBurn can display the laser bed and the objects on it inside the software. Artwork can then be positioned directly over the material or object you can see on screen.

But it goes further.

LightBurn’s camera system can capture an object or piece of artwork placed inside the laser and trace it into vector artwork.

Imagine receiving:

  • a hand-drawn shape that needs to become a cut part;
  • an existing gasket, template or component that needs to be reproduced;
  • an irregular piece of material that needs an engraving positioned in a particular place;
  • a printed design that needs accurate cutting around it; or
  • several products placed on the bed that need artwork positioned correctly.

Instead of measuring everything manually and repeatedly checking positions, the camera becomes part of the production workflow.

LightBurn itself describes its camera functionality as allowing users to position designs on material and to trace artwork or objects placed inside the laser.

For a business producing personalised products, prototypes, signage, awards, templates and short production runs, that can make a substantial difference to everyday workflow.

From physical object to laser job

This is perhaps our favourite PLT-750 demonstration.

Put an existing object or drawing on the laser bed.

Capture it with the camera.

Trace the required shape in LightBurn.

Prepare the cut or engraving.

Run the job.

What traditionally involved measuring, photographing or scanning, importing, scaling and repositioning can often be handled directly at the machine.

That makes the PLT-750 particularly useful for businesses where every job isn’t identical.

And that’s an important distinction.

Production efficiency isn’t only about how quickly the laser head moves.

It’s also about how quickly you can get the next job onto the machine.

90 watts is the sweet spot for serious CO₂ work

The PLT-750 uses a 90W CO₂ laser tube.

That gives it considerably more capability than many smaller desktop CO₂ systems while avoiding the size, weight and installation requirements of much larger industrial machines.

It can cut and engrave a wide variety of suitable non-metallic materials, including applications involving acrylic, suitable woods and boards, leather, paper, card and numerous other laser-compatible materials.

Depending on the material, cutting requirements extend up to approximately 10mm.

As always, material composition matters just as much as thickness. PVC, vinyl and other chlorine-containing materials must never be laser cut, and unknown plastics should always be identified before processing.

The PLT-750 is not a metal-cutting laser. For production metal cutting, talk to us about our fiber laser cutting range.

Air assist isn’t an afterthought

Anyone who has spent time operating a CO₂ laser knows that air assist matters.

It can influence cutting performance, edge quality, smoke contamination and the behaviour of different materials under the beam.

That’s why the PLT-750 includes an oil-free 30L/min compressor as standard.

More importantly, the operator has an analogue pressure gauge and needle valve at the front of the machine, allowing the airflow to be adjusted for the job being performed.

Different materials and processes do not necessarily want exactly the same airflow.

The PLT-750 gives the operator control instead of treating air assist as simply an on/off accessory.

And because the compressor is included, it isn’t another item that appears on the quotation afterwards.

Safety shouldn’t be an optional extra either

Open the PLT-750’s lid while the machine is operating and its magnetic safety interlock stops the laser and machine movement.

It sounds like a small feature.

We don’t think it is.

Laser equipment is increasingly being installed in schools, training centres, corporate workshops and businesses with multiple operators.

A lid interlock provides an important additional engineering control against accidental access during operation.

On the PLT-750, it’s standard equipment.

Built for LightBurn

RDWorks V8 is supplied with the PLT-750 and remains available for customers who prefer it.

But if you want to understand why we’re so enthusiastic about this machine, use it with LightBurn.

The camera and LightBurn combination is where the PLT-750 becomes much more than a conventional 90W CO₂ cutter.

LightBurn provides the camera overlay, camera tracing and sophisticated positioning tools that make visual job setup possible. Its Print & Cut functionality can also align laser work with existing printed or previously processed designs using registration points.

Perfect Laser Technologies is an authorised LightBurn reseller in South Africa, and we can supply and support the software together with the machine.

In our view, buying a PLT-750 and never exploring its LightBurn camera capabilities means missing one of the machine’s biggest advantages.

A serious machine that can actually get into your building

There is another surprisingly practical advantage.

The PLT-750 weighs approximately 168kg and measures 1430mm wide × 1150mm high × 940mm deep.

Most importantly:

it fits through a standard doorway.

Anyone who has installed one of the larger 400kg-plus floor-standing laser machines will understand why we’re mentioning this.

Getting a machine from the truck to its final operating position can become a project of its own.

The PLT-750 delivers serious commercial CO₂ capability without automatically creating a rigging exercise just to get it into the workshop.

700 × 500mm: the one question you need to answer

No machine is perfect for every application, and we’re not going to pretend otherwise.

The PLT-750 has a 700 × 500mm working area.

For a huge range of businesses, that’s an extremely useful size.

But if your products regularly require a larger bed, don’t buy the wrong machine simply because we like the 750.

The PLT-960 provides a 900 × 600mm working area, while larger machines such as the PLT-1390 provide considerably more space.

That physical requirement overrides everything else.

If 700 × 500mm comfortably accommodates your work, however, the PLT-750 is usually the CO₂ machine we recommend first.

Designed for everyday commercial use

There are plenty of impressive specifications on laser brochures.

What matters after six months is whether the machine is still practical to live with.

The PLT-750 includes:

90W CO₂ laser power
Enough power for serious commercial cutting and engraving of suitable non-metallic materials.

700 × 500mm working area
Large enough for a broad range of signage, personalised products, fabrication, prototyping and production work.

Built-in 5MP camera
For visual positioning and LightBurn camera workflows.

Adjustable air assist
With an oil-free compressor, pressure gauge and needle valve supplied as standard.

Active water cooling
Using a 5200-class refrigerated chiller.

Electric Z-axis
Giving approximately 150mm of vertical table adjustment.

Dual work surfaces
Honeycomb and blade tables for different types of work.

Dual red-dot focusing system
A simple and repeatable method of establishing the correct working focus.

USB and Ethernet connectivity
Giving businesses practical options for connecting the machine into their workflow.

Magnetic lid safety interlock
Standard rather than optional.

Front and rear pass-through capability
Providing additional flexibility for suitable longer workpieces.

And the enclosure uses a durable automotive-grade powder-coated finish designed for the realities of a working environment.

Then there is the part specifications don’t show

A laser cutter isn’t just a machine.

Eventually you need a lens.

Or a mirror.

Or a consumable.

Or technical advice.

Or somebody who understands why yesterday’s perfect acrylic cut isn’t behaving the same way this morning.

That is why we believe a commercial laser should be evaluated as a system, not just as a collection of specifications.

Perfect Laser Technologies holds consumables and spares in South Africa, with stock and technical support available from Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Our machines are supplied factory tested, and operator training is available—including training on the PLT-750’s camera and LightBurn workflow.

That local support becomes particularly important when the machine is earning money for your business.

Waiting weeks for an imported component or trying to diagnose a production problem through an overseas marketplace can make a cheap machine very expensive.

So, is the PLT-750 really the best CO₂ laser in Africa?

“Best” depends on what you need.

If you need a 1300 × 900mm bed, the PLT-750 isn’t the best laser for you.

If you need to cut steel, it isn’t the right technology at all.

If you only want to engrave the occasional coaster at home, it’s probably more machine than you need.

But for a South African business looking for a serious, versatile commercial CO₂ laser cutter and engraver, we think the combination is extremely difficult to beat:

90W CO₂ power.

700 × 500mm working area.

Built-in camera with LightBurn integration.

Tunable air assist supplied as standard.

Refrigerated water cooling.

Safety interlock as standard.

Commercial build quality without a 400kg-plus footprint.

Local spares, training and technical support.

And, perhaps most importantly, a camera workflow that can make the time between receiving a job and actually producing it dramatically simpler.

That’s why, across our own CO₂ range, the PLT-750 has become the machine we recommend first whenever the 700 × 500mm bed is large enough for the customer’s work.

Don’t buy a laser from a specification sheet

Bring us your actual work.

Bring a drawing.

Bring an acrylic job.

Bring a product you need to personalise.

Bring an existing component you need to reproduce.

Or bring the awkward job you’ve been wondering whether a laser could handle.

We’ll show you how we would approach it on the PLT-750 and, if another machine is genuinely better suited to the application, we’ll tell you that too.
