Running Fiber Lasers on Windows 11 ARM64 (Snapdragon)

If you have recently purchased a modern, high-performance laptop—such as the Microsoft Surface Pro 11, Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge, or Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x—your machine is likely powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite or Plus processor.

These processors use a highly efficient architecture called ARM64. While they are fantastic for everyday work and design apps, they handle hardware connections differently than traditional Intel or AMD laptops.

Before purchasing one of our Fiber Laser Engravers, please review this guide to understand how your computer will interact with your new machine.


The Technical Challenge: Software vs. Hardware

Windows 11 on an ARM processor is incredibly smart. It can automatically translate and run traditional 64-bit software applications—including LightBurn and EZCad—seamlessly.

However, it cannot translate hardware drivers.

To control a fiber laser over a physical USB cable, your computer requires an underlying system driver (such as the EZCad LMCV4U driver or LightBurn’s WinUSB framework). Because these drivers were written strictly for Intel and AMD processors, Windows 11 ARM64 will block them entirely for security reasons.

What this means for you: You can install the laser software on a Snapdragon/ARM laptop, but the laptop will not be able to “see” or communicate with the laser via a direct USB cable link.


How to Successfully Run Your Laser

Having a new Snapdragon laptop does not mean you cannot use our fiber lasers! It just means your workshop workflow needs to be set up in one of two ways:

Option 1: The “Design Station” Workflow (Most Popular & Cost-Effective)

You do not need an expensive, high-end computer sitting right next to an industrial laser engraver where dust, sparks, and debris are present.

  1. The Office: Keep your premium Snapdragon laptop in a clean environment and use it as your primary creative hub. Its incredible processing speed makes rendering complex vector graphics, text layouts, and photo engravings exceptionally fast in LightBurn.
  2. The File: Save your work as a project file (like a .lbrn2 or .ezd file) onto a USB flash drive or a cloud folder (OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive).
  3. The Workshop: Place an inexpensive, dedicated Intel or AMD-based Windows desktop or laptop next to the laser. This secondary computer doesn’t need to be powerful—it just needs a standard x64 processor to run the USB cable link and fire the job.

Option 2: The USB-over-IP Network Bridge

If you strictly want to use your Snapdragon laptop inside the workshop, you can bypass the USB driver limitation entirely by moving the connection off the physical USB port and onto your local network.

  • By plugging the laser’s USB cable into a third-party USB-over-IP network print server or a mini-PC (like a Raspberry Pi running VirtualHere software), the laser data is transmitted over your Wi-Fi or router network instead.
  • Because Windows ARM64 handles standard network data flawlessly without needing special hardware drivers, your laptop can control the laser wirelessly over your network.
