Running a (SME) business may seem straightforward. You buy a product, add a markup, and resell it – right?
Well, no. A lot more goes into it – from sourcing the correct products at the correct price and quality, ensuring that after-sales service can be viably carried out, stock and parts are available when needed, all the way through to staff able to support the products.
And then comes the biggest part of it all. Compliance.
For a business to be able to trade, you have to be compliant with all the rules, regulations, and legalities.

From the normal things like Company registration, VAT registration, PAYE registration, UIF registration, Skills Development Levy registration, Importer and Exporter registration, to others, such as NRCS (National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications) registration, and when it comes to safety and health, SAHPRA (South African Health Products Regulatory Authority). Phew.
All of this comes with a cost attached – but oddly enough, it is the companies that spend on compliancy that have the most chance of being there for you in the future.
We have an ongoing program to ensure that all of the products that we sell are tested and approved for sale in South Africa.
If you are thinking of buying from a competitor, first ask them exactly how compliant they are, and if their products are legally allowed to be sold in South Africa.
A scary thought is that SAHPRA can stroll into your premises and confiscate your equipment if it does not comply with the regulations – and there is nothing you can do about it.
